The House of Representatives (DPR) in the period 2009-2014 will possibly only have two major factions, namely an opposition and a pro-government faction, a legislator said.

"The deliberations on the requirements for the formation of House factions have not yet been completed, but I think there will be a fundamental change in the coming DPR term, namely the factions will likely consist of only two," lawmaker, Ganjar Pranowo, said, as quoted by Antara state news agency.

Ganjar, chairman of the House Special Committee for the drafting of the bill on the composition and status of the DPR, the Regional Representative Council (DPD) and the House of Consultative Assembly (MPR), was in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said if the two major factions were not formed, at least two major blocs of factions would appear, namely an opposition bloc and a bloc which supported the government.

The presence of two major blocs would make it easier for the DPR make decisions and to vote.

People would also get a better political education because political parties or factions in the House would no longer take inconsistent attitudes.

"Now the people are being taught to be inconsistent because the elite of their political parties are not consistent in their stances. Ahead, all of this must be made clear, whether or not you are in the government's camp. If this could be agreed upon, it would enhance our political course," he said.

Asked about the possibility of the regional representative assembly (DPRD) adopting the two major blocs, Pranowo said in the first stage it would likely be applied to the DPR only because the DPRD had not yet applied the parliamentary threshold system.

As well as the House factions issue, the bill on the status and composition of the DPR still has to deliberate other issues such as the composition and number of the DPR, the MPR and the DPD leaders.
