The Supervisory Elections Committee (Panwaslu) in Bali has recorded at least 14 cases of money politics during the recent legislative election in the province, a spokesman said.
"Based on the records of Panwaslu in Bali, there were at least 14 cases of money politics in the recent legislative election," I Wayan Juana, a Panwaslu official, said, as quoted by Antara state news agency in Denpasar Thursday.
But he said that of the 14 cases, only one, in Klungkung district, could be followed up by the police, because the people who reported it were ready to be witnesses before the court.
"Most of the people who reported cases were reluctant to appear as witnesses for fear of intimidation," he added.
The committee found that in the voting irregularity cases voters got between Rp25,000 (US$2.26) to Rp120,000 from legislative candidates in all districts and municipalities in Bali.
He said the legislative candidates committed money politics in various ways, by distributing the money directly from house to house, or by putting it in the envelopes with their candidate cards and secretly sending it to the voters. (dre)
