DENPASAR: Denpasar Police have named 10 students of the Denpasar-based Indonesia Arts Institute (ISI) as suspects, after they allegedly sealed the rector office's main door with wooden boards during a protest staged at the institute.

They will be charged with unruly behavior and vandalizing state property.

The demonstration was part of a series of rallies held by students to oppose the re-election of Prof. I Wayan Rai as the institute's rector.

With the blessing of the education minister, Rai annulled the result of the previous election, in which he was defeated by the institute's popular figure I Nyoman Catra.

He then disbanded the senate that selected Catra, formed a new senate and held a new election, which he won by a landslide.

The students said they were not afraid of being named suspects or facing a jail term.

"We are not afraid since we did nothing wrong one of the suspects and a students' president, Ketut Ngurah Aryawan, said Tuesday. - JP
