MAKASSAR: A house used as a campaign office by a Golkar Party top politician in Tamalanrea, Makassar, South Sulawesi, has been damaged in an arson attack.

The house has been used as a campaign office by politician Imran Amin Syam, former South Sulawesi governor and former chairman of the Golkar branch in the province.

Witnesses told police that fire lit up the house porch at around 05:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

Dian, one of the housekeepers, told The Jakarta Post she heard the gate open and heard an explosion shortly after. She immediately went out and saw the fire on the porch.

Imran is currently running for a seat on the Makassar City Council. He is also leading in the vote count of the April 9 legislative election.

Dian said there had been no conflict with any other party prior to the incident.

South Sulawesi, home of the party's chairman, Jusuf Kalla, is a major Golkar stronghold.
