Govt likely to miss investment targets for energy, mining

The total value of investments in energy and mining sectors by the end of the year is likely to be below the government’s target, as a result of the global economic slowdown, a minister has said.

"We set a target of US$26 billion for this year, but this target may not be achieved due to the crisis," Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said during a business meeting in Jakarta on Monday.

However, Purnomo said he was optimistic that investment in the sector this year could still be higher than US$20 billion.

Invesment in the energy and mining sector reached US$18.63 billion last year, up from US$15.75 billion in 2007.
