JAKARTA: Edith Yunita Sianturi, who was sentenced to death in 2001, reportedly died of illness at Tangerang Women's Penitentiary early this month.
Warden Arti Wirastuti confirmed Edith's death.
"She had a complication from TB and we later found she had contracted HIV.
"She claimed she was as fit and refused to have her blood sample taken," Arti said, quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Arti said Edith looked shocked when a team from the Tangerang prosecutor's office came to ask her about whether she would appeal her sentence at the Supreme Court.
"Her health had worsened significantly and she told me she preferred to die rather than face the firing squad."
She added Edith's family could accept the death.
Separately, an official with the Tangerang Prosecutor's Office, Fauzan, said the office had declared all legal proceedings on Edith closed following her death.
Edith was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on June 4, 2001, with 1 kilogram of heroin in her luggage.
Besides Edith, four female inmates are awaiting execution: Meirika Franola, Rani Andriani, Merry Utami and Nonthanam P. Saichon of Thailand. - JP
