An ongoing fine art exhibition held in the newly established North Art Space (NAS) at Ancol Dreamland Park offers a new take on the Pasar Seni Ancol art festival.

Visitors have said that the works of art, presented by some 20 local artists, provide new ideas and inspiration.

Ranti, a resident of Kedoya, West Jakarta, said she was interested in the newly revived art festival because the exhibition looked attractive from the exterior.

"It is usually boring to come to Pasar Seni, but I came here because I am curious about this exhibition and this new gallery," the woman, who came on Sunday with her friends, said.

"The works of art here present fresh ideas from younger-generation creators. They *the works* seem very eye catching and interesting for common people like me."

Yoesoef Effendie, a resident of Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta, said the exhibition was good and has the potential to attract more visitors.

"The new gallery and this exhibition have shaped a new image for Pasar Seni. More over, this gallery is very modern and comfortable."

He said the revival of the Pasar Seni was timely because the festival was unable to compete with other art exhibitions held in the city's more contemporary galleries.

"Pasar Seni Ancol was quite a representative art festival in previous years, but it is unable to compete with other modern galleries. It's good that Ancol has built this new gallery," Yoesoef, who is also an artist, said.

The Ancol management has marked the inauguration of the revitalized of the 31-year-old Pasar Seni with the exhibition, "Hybridization", which runs from April 17 to May 3.

The exhibition encompasses various mediums, including painting, photography, installation and performance art.

The gallery has attracted hundreds of visitors since it was inaugurated on Friday night.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Haris Purnomo, Arie Dyanto, Soni Irawan, Sapto Sugiyo Utomo, Galam Zulkifli, Andy Dewantoro, Hanafi, NGK Ardana, Gede Mahendra Yasa, Agus Sumiantra and Irwan Bagja Dermawan.

Photography and digital art by Davy Linggar, FX Harsono and Indra Leonardi is also featured as are installations by Heri Dono, Agus Suwage, Yani Maryani, Ketut Moniarta and Albert Yonathan.

Jompet, Tromarama and Prilla Tania display video art and Saftari presents paintings and installations.

Exhibition curator Rifky Effendy said that artists were selected with the "Hybridization" theme, or an artistic mixture of media and culture, in mind.

Although most artists featured in the exhibition are quite renowned, Rifky says that the quality of their creations was more important in making selections.

"Their fame is actually not the main issue in selecting works. The most important thing is the quality of their works," he said.

People who simply want to go to Ancol Dreamland Park for recreation have found unexpected interested in the exhibition.

"We just wanted to visit the park for recreation, but we're interested to come here to see something new and to let my children learn something," Depok resident Dian, who came with her family, said.

Suhendar, a resident of Kedoya, also came with his family to Ancol to spend their leisure time and ended up seeing the exhibition.

"I also came here to find inspirations for my hobby, photography. This exhibition presents great creativity and imagination by the artists."

The visitors said they were enthusiastic to see more events in Pasar Seni.

According to the Ancol management, upcoming events will include a contemporary photography exhibition in June, a painting exhibition by contest winners in August and a national embroidery exhibition in September.

There will also be international mask exhibition in November and a contemporary painting exhibition in December.
