A group of political figures led by former army special squad chief Prabowo Subianto has demanded the General Elections Commission (KPU) to hand over voters list to political parties for verification.
"None of us have ever received (and verify) the voters list, despite the Elections Law createrly states that the lsit should be distributed weeks before the legislative election," Prabowo said after attending a luncheon at Megawati Soekarnoputri's residence in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
Political parties and civil society groups estimate around 45 million voters were left disenfranchised after not being registered in the voters list. Leaders of political parties have turned on the severely flawed voters list as the main factor in their defeat at the polls.
Upon making the statement, Prabowo was flanked by numerous ex army and police generals such as Sidarto Dhanusubroto, Theo Syafei, Subagyo H.S. and Adang Ruchiatna.
When asked about much talked coalition between his party, Great Indonesian Movement (Gerindra), and Megawati’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PEDI-P) Prabowo said it was not discussed in the luncheon.
"We are now discussing the voters list as it could jeopardize the election if no necessary precaution is taken,” he added.
