Golkar Party has turned to Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for coalition talks after failing to secure a deal with Democratic Party and its patron Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Pramono Anung said Wednesday afternoon top officials from his party and Golkar were in serious talks for a possible coalition.

"The talks have not discussed substantial matters yet, but I must say this will lead to something meaningful for both parties," Anung told journalists at Megawati's residence.

Anung acknowledged that PDIP should still wait several more days for Golkar to come out with its official decision. "Let's hope that the decision will benefit both parties," he said.

A rift has escalated in Golkar after Yudhoyono demanded the party to come up with more names, apart from Jusuf Kalla, as potential running mate candidates in the upcoming presidential election.

Earlier on Tuesday night, Kalla had said that he wanted to part ways with Yudhoyono as he would be running as a presidential candidate for Golkar. The statement was later refuted by other top party officials saying that it was not a final position of the party.

Some Golkar members supported the candidacy of former party chairman Akbar Tanjung as candidate for vice president under the Yudhoyono ticket.
