Non active Regent of Yapen Waropen, Daud Solleman Betawi, was sentenced to four years in prison for embezzeling Rp 2.8 billion of regency's fund in 2006.
"The defendant is legally and convincingly guilty of corruption and shall serve a four year- jail term," presiding judge Sutiyono read the verdict at the Corruption Court here on Wednesday.
The judges also obliged him to pay Rp 200 million in fine or serve an additional two months prison term should he fail to pay the fine.
The case revolves around profit sharing of land and building taxes with the central government amounting to Rp 21 billion as well as natural resources taxes with a total value of Rp. 22.45 billion.
Daud had transferred those funds from Yapen Waropen's account in Bank Papua to his personal account in Bank Mandiri.
The money was then used to finance activities that were not allocated in the regency's budget and for Daud's personal expenses.
