Ratu Hemas, wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, tops the tally of official vote counting in Yogyakarta and secures a parliamentary seat.

Antara news agency reported Thursday that the result of the official vote counting by the Yogyakarta Election Commission showed that Ratu Hemas won majority votes in all the five districts in Yogyakarta where his husband is a king and a governor.

"The plenary meeting to tally all votes for the Regional Legislative Council (DPD) proceeded smoothly, with no protests from all the witnesses," commission chairperson Any Rohyati told Antara Thursday early morning.

Ratu Hemas won 941,153 votes, out of 1.7 million votes, leaving behind all other contenders far behind. The second place went to Cholid Mahmud, who collected only 181,415 votes, followed by Hafidh Asrom with 171,108 and Afnan Hadikusumo with 106,117.

The number of votes for Ratu Hemas is higher than that in 2004 when she garnered less than 50 percent of votes.

The gain also beats some quarters' prediction that she would only be able to collect less than 30 percent of votes.

Ratu Hemas had earlier thrown a party for hundreds of supporters and members of her success team to celebrate her success in securing a DPD seat.

In the general elections on April 9 the Indonesian people selected members of national House of Representatives, regional and district-level legislative assemblies and the DPD.
