PDI-P keeps Megawati as presidential candidate

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is sticking to its initial plan of proposing Megawati Soekarnoputri as a presidential candidate, one of the party’s executive members said in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta.

"Until now, we are sticking to the original plan to nominate Megawati as president. It has been the party's decision from the beginning," chairman of PDI-P faction in the House of Representatives, Tjahjo Kumolo, said Saturday.

The party's stance remains the same regardless recent discussion with Golkar party, Indonesia's largest political party based on 2004 elections, on a possible coalition. PDI-P have engaged in talks with Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) and People’s Conscience Party (Hanura)

Golkar was forced to approach PDI-P after it decided to abandon its nearly five years coalition with the Democratic Party after incumbent president and also founder of Democrat, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that he was considering other names besides Golkar chairman Jusuf Kalla as his running mate.

Following the split, Golkar announced it would launched propose Kalla as its presidential candidate.

"We can not just decide to bond together and go forward. It looks like selecting a husband or wife, you need to consider many factors," Tjahjo said. (hdt)
