Some 200 children and their parents celebrated Earth Day at Bumi Perkemahan Ragunan in South Jakarta by parading in decorated costumes made from recycled materials like newspapers and cardboard boxes on Sunday.

The event, which was organized by newly launched Growing Fun alternative school, had the children participating in environmental-themed competitions like drawing pictures of environmentally friendly behavior and crafting decorations from recycled items.

"We hope this event will make children familiar with environmental conservation and teach parents how they can make their children more environmentally aware," said Wulansary, committee chief of the event and founder of Growing Fun alternative school.

Earth Day is celebrated in the United States on April 22. It is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year.

Ciya Artinia, a mother of three, who participated in the coloring competition, said she hoped the event would make her children appreciate the environment.

"This is a very positive event. I wish that they had this sort of thing every Sunday," she said.
