Comments: Are you watching what they are?

"That's OK, the babysitter in the corner of the room will look after them." This is a line often heard, and often used by parents that are just too busy to make time to be with their children. The "babysitter in the corner of the room" is a television screen in front of which the overworked, or possibly too tired, parent simply sits the children down and hopes that they will watch and behave.

Your comments:
TV in Indonesia is just terrible. How can children in Indonesia watch and learn here? The answer is, they cannot! Indonesian TV channels produce cheap trash for quick and easy commercial gain. There is no investment in education TV. Only mindless trash - like "reality" shows and stupid game shows.

Indonesian television is so bad. What percentage of Indonesian television is educational? 5 percent or 10 percent?

To get any real educational television we need cable channels but how many people can afford the monthly fees for them?

Indonesian TV channels must to be improved.

I agree. Little children should not watch TV at all. There is just too much rubbish on TV and the only time they should be allowed to watch is when the parents have picked the programs and they watch together. Yes, TV can be educational but parents must watch and talk about TV with the children.

Political revenge in Thailand -- April 28, p. 20

From videos broadcast live during the protest and riot, it was obvious that the former Thai prime minister, Thaksin, is behind the movement to overthrow the present government led by Prime Minister Abhisit. The world knows that Thaksin has abundant wealth, and many accuse him of corruption. That's why he fled Thailand and is wandering from country to country to seek political asylum. He is scared because the Abhisit administration has threatened to bring his corruption to the courts. So it is natural for Thaksin to fight back. He possesses everything to reach his goal.

Your letters:
The letter contains a number of falsities worthy of response. The movement to overthrow Abhisit's Government is a legitimate Pro-Democracy initiative to overthrow an unelected Government now plotting to eliminate democratic elections.

Thaksin is the icon of this movement because he has inspired electoral wins on his own merits, and he frightens the current Government who know they cannot compete with this movement in a democratic arena. The corrupt Abhisit government hoisted into power and maintained there by the military and other unelected forces pursues Thaksin relentlessly because of their fear of him. Thaksin's following in the country is huge - Abhisit's is military-based only.

"The harsh measures taken by Abhisit to cancel Thaksin's passport..." are motivated by self-preservation intentions. " To finally bring him back home for trial" is again self-preservation motivated utilizing politically oriented legal entities. The people of Thailand have suffered a lot from the military and the Abhisit Government coup of three years ago that put all these anti-democratic wheels into motion.

PDI-P threatens to boycott race -- April 22, p. 1

The so-called Teuku Umar Block, led by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), is considering not contesting the upcoming presidential elections, not out of fear of being defeated, but because of what they call the systematic and massive manipulation of the recent legislative elections.

Your comments:
I'm afraid that Megawati will simply damage her own reputation by being such a petulant bad loser once again. Back in 2004 she did herself no favors by snubbing SBY after she lost the presidential election. Sure there were irregularities in voter registration and all such irregularities need to be investigated and measures taken to ensure they cannot happen again. But does she seriously suggest that this was the reason PDI-P came in third place?

It's funny that many people who commented here said that Indonesian TV is bad. I think that any TV is bad, and should be strictly limited for kids. There are so many great things to do in Indonesia for kids. TV should be at the bottom of the list.

Thaksin is a crook plain and simple, and is using the money he took from the Thai people to try and return to be the dictator he was before. He was behind over 2000 extrajudicial killings in the North and countless in the South. The current government WAS ELECTED with the help of some of Thaksins old party!
