Nepal's prime minister has fired the army chief, accusing him of defying government orders.
Information Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara says the prime minister announced army chief Rookmangud Katawal's removal after calling a special Cabinet meeting Sunday.
Most political parties in the coalition government walked out in protest, with the main opposition warning of street protests. But a vote was taken by members who stayed to fire Katawal.
Only the president has the power to remove the army chief, but Nepalese laws are unclear because the constitution is still be rewritten.
Katawal is accused of ignoring government orders to stop recruiting soldiers and to fire eight army generals whose tenures were not extended.
