A protest by university students in Makassar turned ugly on Monday afternoon after the protesters clashed with police officer in front of the West Sumatran Governor office.
The protest, participated by around 1,500 people, was aimed to criticize the law on educational legal entities, which major critics has said would lead to the commercialization of education in the country.
The clash started after protesters threw stones at the police.
Police used tear gas canisters and a water cannon to disperse the protesters in the clash that lasted more than an hour.
Antara news agency also reported that 37 students were arrested for attempting to put down an Indonesian flag at the governor office's yard before the clash. (adh)
