JAKARTA: The West Jakarta administration is looking at changing the course of Jl Kali Besar Timur in the Old Town, Kota, to ease the traffic there.
West Jakarta Transportation Agency traffic management head Muhammad Akbar said Sunday his office was studying the feasibility of making cars travel from North to South instead South to North.
The plan is a follow-up of last month's road closures in Kota. The agency closed the southern part of Jl. Kali Besar Timur, Jl. Kunir and Jl. Poskota last month.
"The purpose of the closures is to make it more convenient for people visiting the Old Town," Akbar said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The road closures aimed to reduce the number of intersections and gridlocks in the Old Town. However, Akbar said the closures still had not succeeded in easing the traffic.
West Jakarta Spatial Planning Agency head Muhammad Fausal Kabar said traffic jams could only be reduced by eliminating 21 intersection points in the Old Town. - JP
