Three students from Wanakarya elementary school in Leuwiliang district, Bogor regency, died and two others were injured after they were buried alive in a cave near their school that collapsed Monday.
The accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. when the students were inside the cave located 200 meters from their school. The students wanted to take sand from the cave for the construction of the school's new yard.
Those killed were second-grader Iyon and third-graders Gilar and Ojat, while those injured were second-graders Jamaludin and Awaludin.
Local education agency official Anta Djunawinata said the students had been forbidden from going into the 1.5-meter-deep cave.
"They should not have gone into the hole, because we had hired diggers to do the excavation. We only asked the students to carry the sand from there," he said.
"However, the students went down together while carrying buckets and hoes, because the diggers did not come. And when they were inside the hole, the ceiling suddenly collapsed on them."
As of 12 at noon Monday, the Bogor Red Cross's search and rescue team have found nine students, including those killed and injured.
The four other victims were reportedly unharmed.
"We stopped the search at noon, but we'll continue gathering information from parents, in case any children are still missing," Anta said.
Jamaludin's sister Ika said she was attending a PTA meeting at one of the school's classrooms when the accident occurred.
"We were in the middle of the meeting when we heard students shouting that some of their friends had been buried alive," she said.
"I never thought my brother would be one of the victims."
