The State Logistics Agency (Bulog) is exploring the possibility of cooperating with the Philippines to export rice to the neighboring country.

"It will be an inter-state cooperation. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed by the trade ministers of the two countries in the near future," Bulog chief Mustafa Abubakar said  Wednesday as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Mustafa said national rice production in the past two years had increased by 5 percent to reach 2.34 million tons in 2008, following a national food resilience program in 2007.

He said cooperation in rice exports to Manila had been proposed by the Philippines' government.

"After the memorandum of understanding has been discussed, we will know how much rice will be exported," Mustafa said.

He added that the government would only export rice on the condition that there was surplus domestic stock.

"If we have over production, we will export rice to help neighboring countries," Mustafa said.

He added that after the Philippines, Malaysia would also like to import rice from Indonesia. (dre)
