The government will issue a special regulation
for the development of Coal Bed Methane (CBM), an Energy and Mineral Resources
Ministry official said Thursday.
"Developing CBM fields is different to [developing] the gas fields. In
CBM, we can find gas even in exploration stages. Therefore a new regulation
is needed," Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry oil and gas director Evita
H. Legowo said during the 33rd annual convention and exhibition of the
Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA).
CBM is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds, which can be used for generating electricity.
Indonesia
is estimated to have more than 450 trillion cubic feet of CBM reserves.
The government has already awarded dozens of CBM development deals to contractors, but up to now these deals have used the existing Law on Oil and Gas.
