Police stopped 52 people from crossing the Malaysia-Indonesia border in East Kalimantan apparently to enter illegally as migrant workers from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, early on Saturday morning.

Kupang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Sulistiono told reporters the people came from South Timor Tengah, Belu and Kupang, and were heading to Tarakan in East Kalimantan on Bukit Siguntang ship from Tenau Seaport.

“They ddn't have work documents so the local authorities immediately arrested them,” he told state news agency Antara.

Herry said the police had also arrested Melkianus Foeh, who recruited the workers and claimed he had worked at a palm oil plantation in East Kalimantan.

Herry said the local police stopped around 150 people from going to Malaysia as illegal workers in last three months.

“They said they were going for jobs in East Kalimantan, when in fact they were going to Malaysia." (dre)
