Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi officially opened the first World Ocean Conference in Manado, North Sulawesi on Monday morning
The conference, attended by representatives from 72 countries, is set to produce the Manado Declaration, intended to help save the oceans from further destruction and increase the role of the ocean in reducing climate change.
During his speech, Freddy highlighted two things that both developed and developing countries could do to arrest climate change: reduce emissions of green house gasses and conserving biodiverse areas.
In addition to the World Ocean Conference, Manado will also host the first Coral Triangle Initiative summit, to be attended by six countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste.
