Gunarni Soeworo, a candidate for Bank Indonesia's (BI) senior deputy
governor position, on Monday said BI should develop its supervisory
function to support stronger and more competitive banking and spur economic growth.
"We need to build BI's institutional capacity. In terms of banking management and supervision, [it is needed] to strengthen the function of banking management with the goal of developing the domestic economy," said Gunarni, a commissioner at Bank Mandiri, at a "fit-and-proper" test of candidates.
She added that BI should improve its governance by strengthening its internal audit and BI Supervision Agency (BSBI).
Gunarni, along with tax office chief Darmin Nasution, have been named as candidates to replace BI senior deputy governor Miranda S. Goeltom, who will end her term in June.
The result is expected to be announced late Monday by the House of Representatives' commission XI overseeing financial affairs.
