Rallies to commemorate May 1998 tragedy

Jakarta Police reported Tuesdaya number of rallies would be held to commemorate the anniversary of the May 1998 tragedy, a major event catalyzing the reformation and the fall of Soeharto.
Jakarta Traffic Police said in its official website the rallies would be held from the morning until the afternoon in areas Trisakti University campus, Atmajaya University campus, the House of Representatives compound and the Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle in Central Jakarta.
Police said the rallies would encompass students from Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, University of Indonesia and Bunga Karno University.
The rallies are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. A rally by Trisakti Universtiy students would also be held in front of the State Palace around noon.
Four Trisakti students were killed during a heated demonstration inside the campus on Jl. Kyai Tapa in West Jakarta on May 12, 1998. The shooting triggered widespread student rallies and later social unrest, which led to the resignation of former president Soeharto. (dre)
