JAKARTA: On Monday the city administration planted 600 trees in six cemeteries in South Jakarta in an effort to re-green the areas.

Each of the six cemeteries --Tanah Kusir Utara, Tanah Kusir Selatan, Menteng Pulo Tebet, Menteng Pulo Setiabudi, Kampung Kandang and Jeruk Purut were planted with 100 trees.

"The planting drive is aimed at creating a greener Jakarta. It is also expected to contribute to the improvement of air quality in the city, as well as to restore the image of the cemeteries," head of the South Jakarta Parks and Cemeteries Agency Eddy Supriyantna told beritajakarta.com.

Five species of trees were planted in the cemeteries, including mahogany, Spanish cherry and pong-pong.

Eddy said the planting drive would be expanded to other cemeteries in the city. -JP
