MANADO: Three provincial administrations signed a memorandum of understanding o Wednesday to pave the way for the joint management of Tomini Bay at the heart of the coral triangle.

The MoU was signed by Gorontalo Governor Fadel Muhammad, North Sulawesi Governor Sinyo Harry Sarundajang and Central Sulawesi Governor Bandjela Paliudju, and witnessed by State Minister for the Environment Rachmat Witoelar.

Fadel said the administrations had proposed to the government the establishment of a special authority to oversee the sustainable management of the bay.

"The bay is the only one that lies exactly on the equator. I've been to the Maldives, and I think Tomini Bay is better as a marine tourism destination," he said.

Apart from its tourism potential, Fadel said the bay was an ideal place for marine research, with three international institutions - the UNDP, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Sustainable Coastal & Livelihoods Management - expressing their willingness to fund marine research at the bay. - JP
