As Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Boediono has been chosen as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s
vice presidential candidate, he is expected to step down from BI due to possible
conflicts of interest, lawmaker Dradjad H. Wibowo said Thursday.
"It is better for Boediono to step down so his performance and
professionalism are not jeopardized," said Dradjad, citing the fact that
Boediono was not present at a Thursday meeting with the House of
Representatives' commission XI overseeing financial affairs.
The meeting was called to discuss persistently high bank lending rates, but was
postponed by SBY.
"If he [Boediono] comes to commission XI and explains BI's policies, people
will ask whether he's doing it for BI or for the Democratic Party," said
Dradjad of the National Mandate Party (PAN).
Under the law on BI, a BI official is expected to step down if his performance
is comprised by other activities. If the BI governor steps down, he will be
temporarily replaced by the BI deputy governor.
