INDONESIA: Following his nomination as a vice presidential candidate for incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the July 8 presidential elections, Bank Indonesia (BI) governor Boediono says he will resign from his post as the central bank governor starting Saturday.
Boediono told a press conference on Friday night that he had submitted his resignation to the President on the same day.
"In accordance to the regulation, I am resigning. And I have thoroughly discussed this with my partners at Bank Indonesia's board of governors," Boediono said after officially declaring his and Yudhoyono's nomination as vice presidential and presidential candidate.
"I see that the market is calm now, and that makes me feel quite relaxed with my resignation in such times," he added.
Boediono said without an active governor, the central bank would "operate under the mechanisms ruled by existing law". The 1999 Law on Bank Indonesia suggested the BI governor must resign if involved in political activities. - JP
