JAKARTA: Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization, is exploring the possibility of empowering Muslims in Thailand's restive southern region through education and economic programs.
The move is part of Muhammadiyah's efforts to help bring peace to the conflict-torn region, the organizing chairman Din Syamsuddin said in a text message from Pattani, Thailand, on Sunday.
He said the rectors of six Muhammidiyah universities visited Pattani and Yala in southern Thailand last week to forge cooperative agreements on education.
The rectors offered scholarships to Muslim students to study at Muhammadiyah universities in Indonesia, Din added. -JP
