In a bid to promote the family planning program, the Jakarta administration is planning to give contraceptive treatment for free at community health posts by 2010, a top official says.

Head of the Jakarta Family Planning and Women and Community Empowerment Body (BPMPKB) Tuty Mulyati said Wednesday that health posts were charging Rp 2,000 (US$ 1.8) for treatment.

“We are working to eliminate that,” she said.

Taking the momentum from National Awakening Day on May 20, her office launched an “awakening” of the family planning program in Jakarta. As many as 267 subdistricts in Jakarta held simultaneous campaigns to cadres on family planning.

“In the early 90s, the campaign for family planning was going strong. Everyone knew the slogan, the advertisements were everywhere. But, after the reform era in 1998, the family planning campaign faded,” Tuty said.

Tuty said Jakarta had around 1,150,000 couples of fertile age, of which 61 percent were using contraception.

Tuty added she had plans to reduce the fertility rate, from the 2.1 since 2007 to 2.0.

She said Jakarta had an almost balanced fertility rate because couples were remembering the strong family planning campaign in the 80s and 90s. “However, there are new couples that need to be reminded,” she said.
