Soekarno-Hatta International Airport security officials have foiled a Malaysian’s, KCT, attempt to smuggle in 1,683 grams of methamphetamines worth Rp 3.3 billion (US$318,000).
Chief of Customs Intelligence Eko Darmanto told tempointeraktif.com Thursday that the 37-year-old had tried a new way to smuggle the drugs by disguising them as chocolate candies wrapped in 98 little packs. The packs were put inside a large Aji Ichiban candy bag.
KCT had taken the drugs onboard a plane from Hong Kong on Wednesday. The airport officials noticed his suspicious behavior and put his bag through the X-ray scanner. Inside his bag were two plastic bags covered with pieces of clothing.
“He went to a lot of trouble to smuggle the methamphetamines,” Eko said.
The suspect is now facing up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rp 300 million if found guilty of the offense. (adh)
