DENPASAR: Bali 's Bike to Work community has urged local administrations to introduce a car-free day and encourage students to ride bicycles to school.

Bike to Work community spokesman Endra Datta said car-free days could be implemented once a week or once in a month in certain areas, especially in city streets.

"The main objective is to reduce air and noise pollution in several cities in Bali, especially in the provincial capital, Denpasar," Datta said.

The number of vehicles and motorcycles in Bali has been increasing, he said, without mentioning specific numbers.

"Traffic jams and pollution have threatened the crowded Denpasar," he added.

Denpasar is home to 1.3 million of Bali's total population of 3.2 million.

Datta also urged the local government to build special bike lanes to enable cyclists to ride safely.

"I have seen so many students from junior to senior high schools now choosing to go to school by motorcycle, even when they don't have driving licenses," he said.

"This is very dangerous and violates the traffic regulations."

Datta urged parents and teachers to step in, to protect children against traffic accidents. - JP
