JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) is considering pushing forward the start of the presidential election campaign to May 30, from the initially scheduled June 13, should the candidates submit the necessary documents early.
"Judging from the document submission process, the verification process for those documents will most likely be completed ahead of schedule *on June 26*," KPU member I Gusti Putu Artha said Wednesday.
He added the commission had reached the decision with candidates' representatives Wednesday.
At the meeting, Jusuf Kalla and his running mate Wiranto were represented by the Golkar Party's Burhanuddin Napitupulu and Rully Chairul Azwar; Megawati and Prabowo were represented by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's (PDI-P) Arif Wibowo and the Great Indonesia Movement Party's (Gerindra) Abdul Harris Bobihoe; while Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono were represented by the Democratic Party's Milton Pakpahan.
Putu said there would be two types of campaigning: mass rallies and presidential debates.
"The rallies will commence from June 12 to July 4, and the debate will take place within that period," he said.
He added the candidates would be allowed to hold up to seven rallies per province during the 21-day campaign period. The debates will be held over five days at the KPU office.
"There will be three debates for the presidential candidates and two for the vice presidential candidates," he said, but did not mention who the debate moderators would be.
He added the presidential candidates would debates three issues: clean governance and upholding the supremacy of law, tackling poverty and unemployment and creating food sustainability, and the concept of the next five-year development plan. -JP
