New parking policy pushed back to June

The city administration has delayed the implementation of the five-bonus-one parking policy to early next month, saying preparations are needed before the ruling can be applied across the capital.

The policy rewards motorists who park at on-street parking areas in the capital for five times with one free parking.

Deputy Governor Prijanto said earlier the ruling would be implemented in May.

"The policy will take effect at 410 parking areas owned by city's parking unit in five municipalities," he said recently at City Hall.

Central Jakarta has the most parking areas with 106, followed by North Jakarta (88), South Jakarta (87), West Jakarta (71) and East Jakarta (58).

Under the policy, all drivers parking in "busy" areas will be charged Rp 1,500, while those who park in less busy areas will pay Rp 1,000.

The policy applies only to cars, since the administration has yet to set a fee for motorcycles.

Prijanto said the policy would help the administration control how many parking stubs were issued each day, as well as improve transparency.

"Once again, I call on all motorists to ask for parking stubs, so the parking unit can give exact reports on the parking revenue," he said.

"The ruling will help supervise the parking fee system and eliminate illegal fees."

He added there would be 87 field coordinators and 2,393 parking attendants in charge in the 410 areas.

The administration launched the on-street parking incentive policy in several parts of the city on Feb. 4.

The pilot project is underway on Jl. Pecenongan and Jl. Juanda in Central Jakarta, Jl. Boulevard Raya in North Jakarta, and Jl. Raden Fatah in South Jakarta.

The administration decided to continue the program after deeming the program a success.

"Parking revenue from the four streets is higher than from before we implemented the five-bonus-one program," Prijanto said.

The parking unit raked in Rp 15 million (US$1,456) from Jl. Pecenongan after the implementation of the policy, up from Rp 14 million the previous month. The parking revenue for Jl. Juanda also increased, from Rp 16 million to Rp 17 million.

Prijanto said a cellular operator would also take part in the program by providing uniforms, including vests and caps, for the parking attendants.
