KPK names former Natuna regent a graft suspect

JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) declared former Natuna regent Hamid Rizal a suspect in the embezzlement of Rp 72 billion (US$7.03 million) of funds from oil and gas profit sharing in the regency between 2003 and 2004.

"After an intensive investigation into Natuna's regional budget related to oil and gas profit sharing in the regency, we are now declaring the former regent a suspect in the budget's embezzlement, valued at Rp 72 billion, in 2003-2004," KPK spokesman Johan Budi told reporters Friday.

He added that Hamid had been charged with violating Article 2(1)of the 1999 Corruption Law, on enriching oneself, other people or a corporation, and Article 3, concerning abuse of power. - JP
