KUPANG: Two out of the three lakes on Mt. Kelimutu in Ende, East Nusa Tenggara are naturally changing in color.

Water in the Tiwu Ata Polo or "the lake of bad people's spirits" has changed from dark brown to dark green while the Tiwu Nua Muri Koo Fai or the lake of youngsters turned from light green into bluish green.

Tiwu Ata Mbupu ("the lake of the elders") is still black.

Head of the Kelimutu National Park, Gatot Soebiantoro, confirmed the color changes on Sunday.

"The changes took place in April," he said via telephone.

"The color change started with the presence of a suspension spreading at several places in the lakes."

Gatot said based on research by the Geology Center, Tiwu Ata Polo had iron content while Tiwu Nua Muri Koo Fai had high gas pressure as the volcano was still active.

Mt. Kelimute last erupted in 1886.

Before 2006, the lakes' colors were red, blue and white. - JP
