Lia Eden given three days to compose defense

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta District Court granted to Lia Aminuddin, otherwise known as religious sect leader Lia Eden, her plea to postpone her defense statement until Monday at the latest.

"The council has agreed to give you three days to present your defense statement. If you fail to provide us with any, then we will assume that you have forfeited your right to defend yourself," said Judge Subachran at the Central Jakarta District Court.

This is the second time the Judge has granted Lia a postponement for her defense statement. Judges gave her a week to provide the court with one last Monday.

Lia Eden, who was born in Surabaya in 1947, is leader to the controversial religious sect called the People of Eden, claiming that she is the avatar of the archangel Gabriel. She was arrested in 2006 for religious blasphemy and was sentenced to two years in prison.

She was released last year, but was arrested again for the same charges on December 2008. - JP
