DENPASAR: Only 2.514 foreign visitors entered Bali through its harbors in the first quarter this year, a drop of 27.30 percent from the 3,458 tourist arrivals in the same period last year.
Data from the Bali office of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows the number of foreign tourists entering the island through seaports was only 251 people in March, down from 882 in March last year, or a drop of about 69 percent.
Bali BPS head Ida Komang Wisnu said some of the island's seaports such as Benoa in Denpasar and Amuk in Karangasem regency had already been upgraded to luxury cruise ports.
"Perhaps this is related to the global financial crisis, as most of the tourists arriving through seaports in Bali are from Europe," he said.
"Such cruises are expensive." - JP
