The Muslim clerics should pay more attention to Indonesian soap operas rather than banning social networking sites like Facebook.

I thing the cleric's edict to ban social networking sites for Muslim communities is an unpopular one.
The clerics need to ask the government to block access to Facebook, Friendster and other networks to avoid the misuse of the social networking sites.
It would be better if the clerics pronounced edicts to prevent adultery in Muslim communities.

It will not be effective as it is something that is difficult to control. Like smoking, we are only able to forbid people to smoke in public areas but not in their own houses or other private places.

There is no point in blocking a network or site like Facebook because if an individual wanted to carry out illicit sex they would do so regardless.
Banning Facebook would not solve the problem at all because it is only one very small part of the World Wide Web, which has many other ways to promote or encourage things like this.
If not Facebook, it would be something else. Facebook is actually one of the much safer networks compared to any other online network.
I think the problem that Muslim clerics are trying to solve is actually much bigger than mere networks or websites; they should be reaching out or targeting the younger generation that may misuse Facebook, who are possibly misguided, vulnerable and easily persuaded.

With Facebook, we have many friends and don't have to worry about illicit sex because we can just delete someone if we don't like them.

If you want to get rid of rats, you don't have to set the house on fire. The same with Facebook.
