Sampoerna enjoyed Rp 3.89 t net profit last year

Cigarette producer PT HM Sampoerna Tbk booked Rp 3.89 trillion (US$4.04 million) in net profit last year, up by 7.4 percent from Rp 3.62 trillion in 2007.

The company reported Wednesday that last year’s performance garnered Rp 34.7 trillion in consolidated net sales, an increase on the Rp 29.8 trillion in 2007, with domestic net sales contributing 97.7 percent to the 2008 consolidated net sales.

"The good performance of the company was encouraged by the combination of a rise in sales volume and price," the report says.

In 2008, Sampoerna produced 73.3 billion cigarettes, up from 66.8 billion cigarettes in 2007.

As of last year, Sampoerna has held the largest market share of 29.5 percent. (naf)

So, "Sampoerna has held the largest market share of 29.5 percent". By simple arithmatic it should be reasonable to conclude that Sampoerna could be held responsible for 29.5 percent of the WHO claimed 450,000 Indonesian deaths caused by tobacco - say 132,740 DEATHS.

I hope the shareholders can sleep soundly at night and not have this awful statistic on their consciences. And that they feel their $4.05 million profit was gained by moral means.

And what of the politicians who are supposed to take responsibility for the people's health and welfare? Do they also sleep soundly without a conscience?
