JIMBARAN: Udayana University's Agriculture School is set to introduce new corn varieties: a yellow type named Udayana 1 and a white variety named Udayana 2.

Deputy dean IGN Raka told reporters Tuesday the new varieties would be launched by the end of the year.

"The new varieties, Udayana 1 and 2, are suitable for cultivation in dry soil, similar to land in Buleleng and Karangasem regencies," he said.

"We are now growing the varieties on a 30-hectare plot of land in Sumber Klampok village in Buleleng."

Within 87 days, farmers will harvest their yields at around 6.5 tons per hectare.

"These new varieties require less fertilizer than hybrid corn. They are also immune to various plant diseases," said Raka. - JP
