Jakarta’s annual flower and potted plants promotion event kicked off Thursday in the city's most renowned flower trade center, the Rawabelong market in West Jakarta.
The promotional event will run for three months, significantly longer than last year’s event, which only ran for a week.
"We are holding a bigger and longer event this year to boost the sale of decorative potted plants," head of the market's technical unit Mulyadi said.
The event will feature flower arranging contests, various free plant and flower-related courses, and flower auctions.
Director General for Horticulture Ahmad Dimyati said in his opening speech that flower growers should coordinate better with retailers so they could respond better to the market’s demand and trend.
Also present at the event, Sri Hartati, wife of Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, said flower retailers in the market must take account of their surroundings and give back to their neighborhood.
"I request that the sellers give some of their profit to the needy in this area," Hartati said.
