JAKARTA: It’s not unusual for an artist to be creative in more than one area; in musician Ahmad Dhani’s case, the second area is graphic design.
The singer, who is known as the leader of rock band Dewa, takes pleasure in designing images for T-shirts. Black ones, that is, of course.
“Once every two months I design images for T-shirts. I take ideas from people I admire and I make statements through my designs,” Dhani said, adding that he started his productive pastime some six years ago.
Dhani, who is often embroiled in one controversy or another, with cases ranging from defamation to divorce, is perhaps used to making statements. He does this not only through his music, but also through fashion.
“Most of the time, I choose to wear T-shirts and jeans. You rarely see me in a formal outfit because I see T-shirts as a symbol of simplicity,” he said.
It therefore seemed a natural progression to Dhani to move from being a simple wearer of T-shirts to a designer of the casual top that is said to represent youth.
And in submitting his designs to British-based brand Lee Cooper through the Lee Cooper–Ahmad Dhani collaboration, he means business.
“For me, it has become more than just a hobby.” — JP
