Police to discuss Lapindo mudflow case with AGO

JAKARTA: National Police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri has said his office would discuss with prosecutors a criminal case related to the mudflow tragedy in East Java, so as to speed up the probe into it.

"The main point of the discussion is to find the same perspective regarding this issue, including agreeing on whether this mudflow case is a natural disaster or not," he said Friday.

However, Bambang could not specify the date for the planned meeting with the Attorney General's Office (AGO).

The AGO does not agree with the police's proposed witnesses, as they see a conflict of interest with Lapindo Brantas Inc., a private gas firm widely blamed for the disaster in Sidoarjo, East Java, while other witnesses were considered to be biased toward the affected residents.-JP
