BOGOR: Forty couples officially exchanged vows at a mass wedding ceremony held by the Bogor municipal administration Tuesday in Bogor City Council.

The mass wedding, which was held to celebrate the municipality's 527th birthday, was aimed at helping poor residents in Bogor register their marriage officially at the Religious Affairs Office (KUA), vice mayor Achmad Ru'yat said.

"Many of the 40 couples have lived together for more than decades without official marriage documents, since they have no money to pay the KUA's administration fee," he said.

Titin Sumarni, 46, and her husband, Mad Sai, 54, said they were happy to participate in the event having been together for 17 years.

"We have to pay Rp 750,000 to register our marriage at the KUA, but my husband is never able to collect such a sum of money as he doesn't have a permanent job," Titin said. -JP
