JAKARTA: Betawi figure Emma Amalia Agus Bisri will launch a book on antique Betawi jewelry, in an effort to promote traditional jewelry.

The 100-page book, to be launched on Aug. 9 at the Sultan Hotel, is the 66-year-old founder of the Betawi Cultural Institute's first book.

In her book, Emma encourages native Jakartans to conserve traditional jewelry to prevent it from disappearing.

"In the past, Betawi was rich in jewels, such as bride and groom jewelry, or jewels for teenagers," Emma said, as quoted by Antara.

She hopes preserving the antique jewels will prevent them from ending up in foreign hands.

The launch of the seven-chapter book, featuring pictures and descriptions of some 30 jewels originating from between the 18th century to 1925, will be attended by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo. - JP
