Elected Indonesian president and vice president will be forced to surrender their ideas of economy to the much-debated Western ideology of neoliberalism, economist Ichsanuddin Noorsy said Wednesday.

"Whoever elected as the new president will can do nothing but to follow the pattern of neoliberal style of economy," he told a discussion.

Being a follower of the economic style, the next administration will resort to subsidy reduction and seeking more loans when an economic crisis strikes, he added.

Debate over neoliberalism has been rife ever since incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono picked Boediono as his running mate last month.

I don't think that neoliberalism is the answer to Indonesia's problems. The neoliberal ideology has shown it's shortcomings in the current economic crisis, by being responsible for it. A good balance between socialism and liberalism is the key to a healthy economical situation.
