Lawmaker grateful for dismissal as PKB faction chief

Former chairman of National Awakening Party (PKB) faction at the House of Representatives, Effendy Choirie, believes his recent dismissal was connected with his vote for a House inquiry into the electoral roll debacle.

"I am grateful because I believe my dismissal was a result of my decision as the faction chairman to approve the House inquiry right," Effendy said Wednesday.

PKB faction was against the wish of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party (PD), although the two had signed a political contract to support the re-election of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

"We agreed on the inquiry, because the voter list management issue is a matter of human rights in democracy," Effendy said. "The inquiry right is a control mechanism to gauge the government's performance in the legislative elections. I believe such a right is for the people's interests rather than politicking."

According to the losing political parties, around 40 million eligible voters could not exercise their right due to the mismanagement. (hdt)
