Letters: Why are imported goods so scarce?

I have a question I am hoping someone can answer for me. I am wondering why there is such a shortage of imported foods in the supermarkets.

I assume there must be some sort of government restriction on foods from foreign countries. My question is why the government here really cares if I have the brand of mayonnaise or breakfast cereal or canned beans that I want.

I have lived here in Indonesia for fifteen years and this is the first time I have been unable to buy whatever foreign-made foods I want. Please help me to understand what is going on.
