East Kalimantan has secured two prestigious Kalpataru environment awards this year, including the Environment Savior trophy, awarded to indigenous Dayak tribe leader Ledjie Taq.
Balikpapan Mayor Imdaad Hamid will share the laurels, having been named the Environment Advocacy award winner.
The awards will be conferred during the commemoration of World Environment Day in Jakarta on Friday.
Imdaad will represent the city of Balikpapan in the award presentation ceremony for winning the Adipura Award in the big city category for a record 14 times. The award, which is given to the cleanest regions, eluded Balikpapan last year due to a series of floods that hit the oil-rich city.
East Kalimantan towns of Bontang, Tarakan, Malinau and Bulungan will join the award-winning spree for their efforts to protect the environment.
“My responsibility for protecting the environment will not stop after receiving the award,” Ledjie said at Sepinggan Airport prior to his departure for Jakarta.
